I’ve had coffee and cake in Katuaq, Greenland’s cultural centre built in thick glass and solid pine, with a wavy roof inspired by the Northern Lights. I’ve had Sunday brunch there – many times. I’ve been to exhibitions – reluctantly, and often when working. I’ve seen a few movies, sitting in the rigid seats of the theatre, and I’ve even listened to a few politicians give talks during a campaign. But I never, ever, visited Katuaq dressed as a witch.

I’m just going to say it.

I loved it.

The big hat I had to hold on to in the wind, the sexy black lace gloves from fingertip to elbow, and the even sexier veil that I wore like a mask across my eyes.

Yep.

Loved that.

The stripy black and grey wool stockings were fun, and the heels were a whole other kind of fun, especially when it started to snow. The black dress was the second of the two options Atii helped me rent for the evening.

It was the most appropriate.

Option number one was sexy as hell, and I felt a twinge of excitement when I slid into it and checked my look in the mirror.

Atii tried it on after me, and I caught the look in her eyes as she imagined wearing it for Gaba – depending, of course, on the current state of their on-off relationship.

Dress number one was sexy as hell, but I couldn’t run in it. Neither did I want to give Duneq the wrong impression, especially as he was going as Casper the Ghost, albeit an adult-sized version.

“It’s a shame,” Atii said, turning from side to side in front of the mirror. “I mean, it’s just the one night.”

“It is,” I said. “A shame, that is.”

I still had the image of me inside said sexy witch outfit. But as the department was picking up the rental bill, options were limited to one night only. But I didn’t want Atii to feel left out. And, as agreed with Gaba, and approved by the commissioner, the budget for Operation Halloween stretched to three costumes, not including the sexy one about to be returned. I left Atii in front of the mirror as I fetched her costume from the hall.

“Here,” I said, pressing the cardboard box into her hands.

“What’s this?”

“Your costume.”

Atii gave me that look, and it was a good one, preserved for all time in my memory as she wrinkled her nose at the same time as curling her lips. But, as I had expected, her face changed as she opened the box and pulled out the fake leather devil’s outfit, complete with a forked tail.

“And you can run in it,” I said, pointing out the flat-soled shoes that came with the costume.

“You’re kidding me, right?” Atii said, as she held up the costume by the shoulders and posed in front of the mirror. And then, a second later, she said, “Was there a mask?”

“Absolutely,” I said, pulling out a mask in the same fake red leather, complete with horns. “There’s only one problem, Atii.
