Chapter 18
XANDER
“That fool,” I said, through clenched teeth. “That insufferable fool.”
“You must control your temper, your highness,” Eiden said, scurrying to catch up to me as I burst from the double doors. “You know what happens when you lose control.”
I left the Blood Lottery, enraged, and thirsty for a brawl. If my brother thought he could take her from me, he was sorely mistaken. He’d done it on purpose. I knew that much.
Taelen always had to prove his superiority, when it couldn’t have been much clearer. He would rule one day. Why wasn’t that enough for him?
Moira was my insurance—she was the only thing keeping Ava from escaping.
The winds of change were blowing, and I was determined to be on the right side of the war that was coming. Did Taelen not understand what he’d just done?
Ava was far more powerful than she even realized. She was a creature unlike anything Aranthia had ever seen. Not since her brother had there been another like her.
Their mother and father were not of this world, and the introduction of such powerful magic wasn’t a coincidence.
The gods were somehow responsible.
Ava would decimate us all if she was set free. And, even worse, the Evernight King would have no opposition.
I paused outside the cathedral where the Blood Lottery had been held. The sun was hidden behind dark clouds.
A storm was coming.
“Wait,” I said, under my breath. “Wait just one bloody minute.”
“What is it?” Eiden asked, lifting his brows.
A slow grin came to my lips as I began to realize something. “She doesn’t have to know I no longer have her sister,” I said.
Eiden looked confused.
I nudged his upper arm. “This may be a blessing in disguise,” I said, nodding. “Let Taelen entertain the insufferable human girl. I’ve enough on my plate as it is.”
“Oh,” Eiden said. “Yes. Grand idea, your highness. Grand indeed.”
“The seraphim doesn’t know Taelen and I are at odds, and if she does find out, she wouldn’t know the difference. Moira is still captive.”
“Yes, that is true. You didn’t want a mistress anyway, your highness.”
I took a few deep, cleansing breaths and fixed my eyes on the Sky Keep above. No longer would I wait for fate to favor me.
At that very moment, the monks were looking for a way to make humans into weapons that could be used against the Evernight king. Equally curious if it could be done, I left them to their work.
But, my attention was called elsewhere.
Father summoned me, and though my stomach was clenched tight with dread, it was the moment I had waited for.
I called Ruxi, and she flew toward us. Once we climbed onto the wyvern, we flew over the city toward the palace.
King Kirian was certain to be incensed.
Good.
Let him be.
I was the only one with the cure for the infliction he’d cast upon this kingdom.
It was time to remove my mask, and let him bow to me.
