The Last Warning

All this time Frank was continuing to read and to hide away his father’s letters. A few were addressed directly to him. As for those sent to Ellen, Frank had already, early on, gathered a bundle of them and entrusted them to her on condition that she would promise not to read them. Afterward he concealed from her the fact that they were still coming. The last letter he allowed her to see was dated August 7, 1871. A week later another was delivered, and perhaps it was this one that persuaded Frank to keep all future communications from Mansfield strictly to himself. Writing again on Carleton’s stationery, Mansfield seemed to be trying to shape his ferocity into something like literary form. He seemed also to want to identify, once and for all, the source of his deepest rage.
