Syrella was furious, and she still clutched Peter’s sword, its blade stained with blood. “How did you dare talk to me like that?” she shouted.

Sophie crossed her arms and looked at her as if she was contemplating how to begin. “You’ve never wanted a new alliance with me… The only reason you accepted me in the city was because you knew that only united would we have even a slim chance against Walter.”

“You betrayed El—"

“You said that dwelling on the past makes us weak, but you’re the one who hasn’t put it behind you,” the queen said, cutting her off. “I wanted to fight by your side, but your plan would have wiped out all the men I had left.”

“Your plans cost you every ally in the kingdom! How dare you say that a single failure in battle is a treasonous act against Elmor?” Syrella said, seething.

Sophie looked as if she wasn’t sure what to say. Syrella’s patience was wearing thin. The queen’s words had angered her so much that she was ready to throw Sophie out of her city.

“When I said you betrayed Elmor, I didn’t mean by your decisions at the Battle of the Forked River,” Sophie went on.

Syrella took a step forward and prepared to strike the queen with the sword in her hand. I’ve sacrificed everything for this place and Sophie dares to challenge me after she abandoned me?

“Will you kill me?” Sophie asked.

“No, not if you ask for forgiveness.”

To her surprise, Sophie started laughing. There wasn’t a trace of fear on her face, and she looked insane.

“Do it!” the queen suddenly shouted. “Kill me! Maybe then I can finally escape from the kingdom I’ve never wanted. You’ve been accusing me of treason for years even though I wanted to help you. I sent Peter to reason with you before the Battle of the Forked River… I tried to explain to you that no matter how clever your plan was, Walter would find out, and slaughter your men! My cousin has eyes and ears everywhere”.

“I might not have known if there were spies in Wirskworth, but I was afraid that Walter would find out about the plan. His scouts would ride to every corner of Elmor before he attacked, and he always finds conspirators in the cities of his enemies. I was right, and I tried to explain to you that you would lose, but YOU WOULDN’T LISTEN! NOW YOU ACCUSE ME OF TREASON. YOU ACCUSE ME FOR THE ONLY RIGHT DECISION I’VE MADE WHILE SITTING ON THAT DAMNED THRONE!” Sophie took a breath before continuing. Syrella was certain that she had wanted to say all these words for a long time. “I know that you believed you would win, but you made a mistake… Just like you made a mistake in telling the people of Elmor lies all these years.”

“LIES? I’VE GIVEN MY WHOLE LIFE TO THIS LAND!” Syrella shouted.

“WHO IS THE FATHER OF LINARIA AND MERHYA?!”

Syrella took a step back, her soul filling with a strange emotion.
