Chapter Fourteen

NICO

LARGEST TRAFFICKING ARREST IN CHINA TO DATE

By Ewan Dalton

Fifty-seven men and women apprehended for their involvement in human and drug trafficking.

After an anonymous tip was sent to authorities in Shanghai, Tianjin, and Ningbo-Zhoushan, shipments coming in from and heading to Mexico and California were confiscated. Nine shipping containers were subject for search, and authorities found over 20,000 kilos of cocaine, weed, and opioids worth over $1 billion, along with 38 trafficking victims ranging from men, women, and children. This is one of the largest seizures China has ever had. Authorities are working with the United States, Canada, Mexico, as well as some additional countries in South America, in efforts to make more arrests and return the victims to their homes.

Satisfaction rolls over me, but it’s short lived. I received an alert two days ago that Caishen Goh submitted a flight plan on his private plane and that he would be landing in New York City today. This isn’t a surprise. From what I’ve found, he visits this time of year and stays for a month. He’s been attending the Annual van der Sar Charity Ball and Auction for decades.

Aside from the seizure of his shipments on China’s ports, my wife also had all shipments leaving The Golden Triangle blown up. Costing the 14K billions more. As expected, Caishen was not arrested, as he’s far too smart to allow any sort of connection.

The familiar tapping of my mother’s heels approaches my office door, followed by a knock. Without waiting for my response, my mother bursts in.

“Hey, Ma. Appreciate you coming.” I lean forward to greet her.

She kisses my cheeks before pulling back.

This conversation is long overdue.

Ignoring me, she gives me a once-over at my hoodie and black jeans. Frankly, the jeans are an improvement from the usual attire.

“Nico, what on earth are you wearing?” She gasps.

We do this every time, but she never fails to act surprised, as if she doesn’t already know I refuse to wear a suit unless absolutely necessary. I’m a hacker and security guy, not a businessman.

“Ma, I didn’t ask you to come here to talk about fashion.”

“Right, right. What did you need? I have a list of things to get done today. We’re preparing for the ball that you and Anya are expected to attend. I heard she’s good friends with their boy Jeremy—”

“That’s actually why I invited you to talk today.”

She tilts her head in surprise.

I gesture for her to sit on the large leather couch and take a seat by her. “You know there’s no need to worry. I’ll send you both the details when the time is closer, and the stylists will take care of your looks.”

“No, Ma. That’s not what I mean.” Best to just spit it out. “The wedding is over, so . . . after this event, Anya, and I will be taking a step back for a while.”

Her eyebrows shoot up. “What do you mean? Step. Back.”

“Exactly that. We’re done with interviews and appearances until further notice. Tell whoever you need to tell that we want to spend time together as newlyweds.
