Chapter Ten: Open up the Sky

Though they could not see the light of the new morning, the luminescence upon Baridryn’s buildings began to fade. Icarus watched as the stonework he leaned on dimmed, darkness returning to the area between his fingers. “We’re running out of time,” he said.

“If I had wings, we’d be there already,” Samael replied.

The elf shook his head. “It’s better this way. There is more secrecy to our approach.” Icarus peeked around the corner, his vision ascending the steps until it reached the entrance to the building, where a pair of sentinels stood unmoving. “Still, it’s not without its flaws,” he said, pulling back out of sight.

“What is it?” the human arcanist asked.

“Guards. Two of them. We could chance attacking them head on, but if we fail, our presence could be known and all this secrecy would have been for nothing.”

Samael nodded. “We need a distraction.”

Risking another glance at those who would prevent their entry, Icarus squared his jaw. “Yes, but Baridryn’s sentinels are known for their...” When the elf turned back to his companion, he saw that the human had his hand extended. A small sphere of flame no bigger than a marble rolled over in his palm. “Not to deter you,” the elf said, “but I doubt they’ll even see that, let alone leave their post to investigate it.”

Samael’s brow furrowed, but his attention remained focused on the magic he nurtured into being. The ball of fire continued to roll, but it pulsed as it did, yearning to expand. The human lifted his arm, and with a flick of his wrist, he let the miniscule spell fly away.

Through narrowed eyes, Icarus could only see the flaming marble for a few moments. “You’ll have to forgive me,” he said, “but what did that accomplish?”

A concussive blast from the south roared out with such ferocity and heat that it sucked the air away from them. The elf blinked away his surprise, and he felt Samael hold him against the stonework.

“Are we under attack?” they heard.

One elf flew past them on ethereal wings, and the other was quick to follow. A tap on the shoulder was the only indication Samael gave to inform his companion of his intentions. Together, both ascended the stairs, passing through the entrance.

Though their footsteps were quiet, they seemed to echo down the empty halls. The intruders exercised caution around every corner and intersection. “Where is everyone?” Samael asked.

Icarus led the human forward, until they finally heard indiscernible voices. They followed the incoherent words through the hollow building and finally made their way to the chambers of the councils.

“It is time,” came an insistent voice in one of the rooms before them. “I will go and commune with the wind crystal. Felguin, when you and the other evokers are sure the crystal keepers are ready to begin the ritual, send Llenaduil my way. Sentinel, you’re sure you can make the ascent? It will be a difficult climb.”

“I will not disappoint you, High Arcanist.”

“Time is too scarce to remain in the shadows,” Samael whispered.
