Chapter Fourteen

Nate’s mother calls bright and early on Sunday morning. Olivia’s still sleeping in the spare room, and Nate begrudgingly starts a pot of coffee for her, even though he has no plans of drinking any of it himself. Just as he finishes switching the pot on, he feels the telltale vibration of his cellphone in his pocket.

“Nathaniel, I swear, if I have to find out another thing from Olivia,” is his mother’s opening line. Nate can only wonder what Olivia managed to tell her in the intervening hours since he went to sleep.

“Mother,” Nate says, voice as friendly as he can manage this early in the morning. “What exactly did Olivia tell you?”

Elena Lawrence makes an affronted noise over the phone. “Why, that she met Liam, and that you went together to see her new installation, and I haven’t even learned his name, yet! Nathaniel, really!”

Nate laughs at his mother’s dramatics. “It’s not that big of a deal,” he says, trying to placate her. “We haven’t been seeing each other for that long.”

“Why can’t you tell me these things!” his mother says. Nate rolls his eyes even though she can’t see it. “At least tell me what he’s like. I knew I should have come down there with Olivia this weekend.”

Nate thinks about her request. What is Liam like? Nate doesn’t really know the other man that well yet, although they did get to know each other’s bodies quite well Friday night. He finds himself grinning, thinking about it. “He’s cute,” Nate says. “A little shy. You’d probably like him.”

Elena sighs again over the phone. “That tells me nothing. I’ll just have to get it out of Olivia. Or at least send a photo.”

“I don’t have any,” Nate says honestly. “We really only just started seeing each other.”

“Hmmm.” His mother doesn’t sound convinced. Nate’s not sure taking photos of Liam would be a good idea. He frowns. He imagines having photos of them on his phone after all of this is over, and it makes something twist deep inside his chest.

Nate will be seeing Liam for a while, at least until the annual charity gala towards the end of the year, maybe longer than that. Nate finds that he doesn’t mind the idea as much as he’d expected to. He never really thought about dating, but something with Liam feels so natural. Usually after he has his fun with a man like they did on Friday, he’s done, but he’s already looking forward to the next time he sees Liam. His cat seems oddly at ease, now, too. The silence is dragging out too long, he realizes.

“Well, we’re coming up to Seattle in a few weeks,” he admits, just to have something to say. And she’s going to find out anyways, so she might as well find out from him this time. “To meet with the Wellingtons again.”

“A couple’s trip!” Elena says, obviously thrilled. “Oh, how romantic! And I would just love to meet him!”

Nate rolls his eyes again, but something pierces through him at her hopeful tone.
