CHAPTER TWO

I’m not opposed to arranged marriages in general, but I am opposed to my mother, specifically, choosing my spouse. –Chloe Frangipani

No one takes what is mine. –Aiden Frost

I took a deep, calming breath and looked for Frost in the crowd. I needed him to get me the hell out of there before I killed my mother in front of five hundred fae who might, sort of, like her. I didn’t see him, so I turned back to Vauxhall, and noticed three people, two women and a man, step up onto the platform behind us. I ignored my instinct to run and tried to think. I needed an escape plan that didn’t embarrass Vauxhall or my mother too badly. Not because I cared so much about their embarrassment, but because I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life listening to my mother complain about how I’d ruined all her plans. Oh, hell, I realized with a wince, the only way to do that would be to marry the faun.

“Greetings, citizens,” one of the women said. “As lead councilor to our late king, his royal highness Tiller Fecund the third, I’m pleased to officiate at the matching ceremony of his cousin and heir Vauxhall Fecund.”

And it all clicked into place. This wedding was nothing more than a scheme on my mother’s part to make me queen. I could only guess that Vauxhall had agreed to the marriage in order to unite the two kingdoms and maintain peace. “I’m sorry,” I said, leaning in to whisper to Vauxhall. He ignored me and continued watching as the councilor told the people what a wonderful king he’d make and how fate had brought the two of us, along with our two kingdoms, together.

I put a hand on Vauxhall’s elbow and tried again. “Vauxhall.”

A growl interrupted me, and I felt Frost’s fur against my bare leg. Vauxhall looked down at Frost and took several steps back. The councilor and the crowd went silent. Tell them, Frost said telepathically, giving me a bit of a shove.

“That’s what I was trying to do,” I whispered. “I was also trying to avoid a scene, but you just fucked that plan all to hell.”

Frost glared at me and I glared right back. He was in the wrong and he knew it.

“Clarinda,” my mother said, her regal voice carrying. “Please ask that animal to leave the platform.”

“This isn’t an animal,” I said, trying to be loud enough for everyone to hear me over the resumed murmurings of the crowd. “This is Aiden Frost, a werewolf, and my mate.”

“No,” my mother said. Her eyes widened and her mouth dropped open, but her shock lasted only a moment before she shuffled over to Vauxhall as regally as possible. “She’s been brainwashed. That mutt is from the shadows and he must be destroyed.”

Vauxhall turned to me, his confusion and fear obvious. “Clarinda?”

“No,” I said. “He’s from the Non. He’s my mate, and I love him.” The words just sort of popped
