Chapter Nineteen

Ikicked in the gate and strode up the pathway, where a pair of guards stepped in front of me. I eyed them both. I was still holding on to Ellie, keeping her cloak up against my chest, and holding the bundles of clothes that I had purchased, but I should just drop them and run. My concern was for Ellie, not whether I was dressed appropriately for some celebration tonight.

“I need to see Aronith,” I said, looking from one guard to the next. “Let him know that Zaren Joha is here for him. He knows me. I’m with the Busalan delegation.”

One of the men pulled a small item out of his pocket and held it up to whisper into it.

Some sort of communication fabrication, which I could see quite a few uses for, but at this point, the only thing on my mind was getting help for Ellie. If I were back in Busal City, I could go to Jamie, and I could get her all the help she needed.

“You will wait right here, Mr. Joha,” the man said. He had a slightly accented voice, his words clipped. He positioned himself in such a way that I wasn’t going to get past him without fighting, which would be difficult while holding on to Ellie, and I wasn’t about to set her down.

Her breathing had slowed while I had been running.

I didn’t know what that Guild member had done to her, but I was concerned that he had tried to kill her.

And if he had…

If he had, then he had to know that I would come for him.

Maybe that was what he intended, because he thought that he could deal with me. And if he thought that, then he was in for a rude awakening.

The door to the palace opened, and Aronith strode out, looking straight at me before his gaze drifted to Ellie, and a frown darkened his brow.

“What is going on, Mr. Joha?”

“My apprentice was targeted by a member of the Guild,” I said, speaking hurriedly. I didn’t know how much he knew of the Guild, but I suspected that he had some understanding of the types of things that the Guild was involved in.

“You dealt with the Guild here?”

“Not here, but when I was out shopping.”

He flicked his gaze to Ellie. “She looks as if she is struggling.”

“She is. I don’t know what happened. Her breathing has slowed.”

“Come with me,” he said.

Then Aronith ushered me into the palace itself. He veered off down the hallway to the left and nodded to a pair of patrolling soldiers before taking me toward a closed door. He knocked once and then pushed open the door, stepping inside.

A casually dressed woman in a gray gown was seated in a chair, looking down at a book when we came in. She jumped to her feet when we entered, glancing from Aronith, to me, and finally to Ellie.

“What did you bring me this time, Aronith?”

“This is Mr. Joha, and he is with the Busalan delegation, and his apprentice was poisoned, we think.
