Most people within or outside Bosnia don’t like talking about reconciliation. I have grown accustomed to the survivors being reluctant to discuss this issue. What surprises me is the anger of certain outsiders who wade into the discussion like raging bulls, trying to gore everyone in their way. In the Bosnian language reconciliation literally translates as making peace, and some survivors say they didn’t have a quarrel with anyone, hence no need for them to make peace – with anyone. Reconciliation is a very uncomfortable way of releasing pain which initially may increase the existing pain, but it’s much better than remaining in this state of denial which is akin to claiming the moral high ground on shifting sands. Reconciliation can be personal or societal, or both. The individuals I just described obviously don’t understand their personal need to reconcile themselves with their own past. It’s a process which ultimately drives you towards acceptance of past events. It’s about self-healing; it’s about becoming an active citizen; it’s about giving your past suffering some meaning.
