Now what? Kulf put the billet back where he had found it. “I must go now, lord, or they will miss me.”

The boy said softly, “Mother save us!” Then, louder, “You’re not going anywhere yet.”

Headman had told him that too. Kulf sat down to wait for orders.

“Take his clothes off before they get soiled.”

Conditioned by twenty years’ obedience, Kulf obeyed. Undressed, Headman looked nastier than ever: flabby, hairy, and corpse pale.

“Now put them on.”

Easier said than done. He had forgotten how to do that. Kogoluin garments were meant to be loose, but Headman’s were very tight on Kulf. Headman was bigger than most Kogoluin, but Kulf was bigger than most Nisoimians. There was blood on the clothes, but it did not show much on black cloth. He managed to get them on, except the boots, then he sat and waited for more orders. When none came, he lay down, curled up as much as he could in the clothes, and went to sleep.
