CHAPTER 14

The rider-beast turns to face us. Though its bobble-head is blinded, the horse head still has a pair of working, glowy green eyes. As the horse head glares at us, letting out puffs of angry smoke from between its black-stained teeth, the rider head screams in rage and pain, flailing its long, clawed arms, slashing at everything close to it, which thankfully is not us.

Russell and I face off with the monster, standing our ground not two dozen feet from where it’s standing under the hotel awning, our backs against a row of derelict cars. Right now I am running through a list of every monster bane I can recall, trying to come up with ones which might have a chance of working on this thing. Iron? Silver? Holly? Holy water? Salt? Its true name? God, I hope not. Uhh… shit! This is a fucking crapshoot.

The monster charges forward, covering the distance between us in a blink. Russ and I don’t have time to get out of its way, so we do what we can not to get trampled. I tuck in and roll to the side, missing another rake of its toxin-dripping talons. Russell attempts the same, but ends up trapped with his back against one of the cars, leaving an opening for the monster to strike. Rearing on its hind legs, it prepares to smash its front hooves on Russell’s squishable skull. Needing to draw its attention before it does, I rake my claws against its flank. I don’t do much against its thick hide, but I draw more blood at least. The monster screams and slams its arm into me, knocking me back, giving Russell the chance to move away before its hooves come down, crushing the entire front of a sedan where his head was a moment before.

I try to get back to my feet, but find bobblehead-demon left a deep cut across my stomach with its last swat. The same as my back, the wound burns. It’s gonna go numb here before too long. My vision also goes a bit blurry. More toxin. Not sure how much even my Aos Sí body can take. I try and shake it off, forcing myself to fight past the dizziness. That was a mistake. Oh man, I might hurl…

Russ, hold on! Since the monster isn’t taking advantage of the fact I can’t even make it back to my feet, Russ must be doing all he can to keep the bobblehead demon off me. He won’t be able to hold out long, not if the creature is done playing with us now that I’ve hurt it. Come on, Morgan. Get up. Get up! You’re not fucking done yet!

I make it to a knee, but that’s as far as I can go. My back has gone numb and it’s spreading into my legs and shoulders. I can’t tell if it’s trying to paralyze me or if it’s like a neurotoxin and is eating away at me from the inside. Either way, it’s not good for me or Russ.
