CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Temple Bar in Downtown Dublin is known around the world as a go-to for visitors to Ireland, and there’s good reason. It’s made up of many rooms and bars, all under a roof that has seen more beer and whiskey poured in its history than any other locale on the planet. From the Irish bands that have played everything from folk songs to U2 to the life-size statue of the beloved, bespectacled novelist and poet James Joyce. His quote that sums it all up is part of Temple Bar: “They lived and laughed and loved and left.”

If you like the color red, you’ve come to the right place, and Francesca’s tight-fitting blouse and slacks stacked above her red heels made her fit right in. It had taken two days to convince Richard Christopher to meet her there. Her story was that she was an investigative reporter from the continent pursuing a story on the murder of Thomas Sinclair, a powerful man in the U.K. and the EU. When he finally agreed to meet, she understood his reluctance to meet there the minute he arrived.

After introductions inside the front door of the bar, Francesca handed the hostess a one hundred euro bill and asked for a private table in their quietest room. Within minutes, Francesca and Richard were seated on opposite sides of a small round table, in a very small, very private room. The server, a polite and enthusiastic young woman with a Czech accent, took their drink orders and left them.

“It’s been so long since the last time I came through those doors,” he told her. She told him that she really appreciated his agreeing to meet her and to discuss the case. With the speed of a Ferrari, she got going.

“So, if I may call you Richard,” she began. He nodded and then acknowledged the drink runner who placed his pint of beer in front of him and her Spritz with her.

“As I told you over the phone,” she continued, “Sinclair had business holdings in Italy, as well as everywhere else, it seems. Since his death, there has been much speculation that perhaps he was on the wrong side of certain people. Perhaps powerful people in Naples, who decided he needed to go. Could you comment on that speculation?” Richard laughed and then spent the next few minutes, laying it all out for her.

He described the various businesses Sinclair Holdings had across Europe, China, Australia, Canada, Mexico, oil rights in six states in America, and a mining company gleaning minerals from the rights he held across Africa. He went on to list the various political appointments he had held in the last three governments in the U.K., the most recent of which was special counsel to the Prime Minister. He also had been elected to political office in London and then to parliament. They went back and forth for a time over the Italian connections; that was her slant on the story after all.

“So, do you think he had enemies?” she asked.
