The surname had been scored right through, almost obliterating it. It was a short name, just a few letters. The first looked like a P or an R . . . Or possibly a B. Little pieces of information were slotting together in my mind. The death at the commune, the tree-planting ceremony we had read about in the paper, Jasmine . . . But for every question answered there were ten more raised. Who had been up here at dawn, destroying Jasmine’s memorial plaque, and why? It felt like such a violent act. Who would want to erase the very memory of this girl?
