Chapter Twenty

The ticking clock was like the timer on a bomb. Every stroke of the hand brought Latoya closer to what was going to be her best or worst idea yet.

She tapped her pen against her teeth, having long given up on paying attention to her work. This close to the end of the day no document on her desk or file in her computer would be able to distract her.

The clock ticked again. Couldn’t anyone hear that thing? Why was it so damn loud?

Latoya was so busy staring at the clock that she wasn’t paying much attention to her surroundings. And that was probably why she didn’t realize anyone was in front of her until they waved a hand in her face.

She startled, surprised to see Ganesha. Her co-worker had a fist propped against her bony hips. Dark eyes fastened on her. Brown lips stretched wickedly. “What are you thinking about, missy? Your boyfriend?”

Latoya jerked her gaze from the clock to Ganesha. “No.”

“I think you are.” Ganesha slid over the desk, her ashy elbows skating over documents, paperclips, and a half-eaten bag of chips.

“If you need something, can you make it quick? I have somewhere to be.”

“I know. Your boyfriend’s waiting outside.”

Latoya went completely still. Boyfriend?

“I didn’t know you were into Asian guys, Latoya!” Ganesha chortled, her round face widening with glee. “Are you going to be working in his store?” She snorted as if she’d said the funniest joke ever. “Imagine yelling ‘chini’ in the window and your black face comes out.” She opened her mouth and laughed. “That’ll be shocking.”

Latoya gritted her teeth. She would lecture Ganesha on how rude it was to call a Chinese person ‘chini’ but, honestly, she didn’t think it would make much of a difference.

The clock finally struck five, freeing Latoya from work and from Ganesha’s ignorant laughter.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.” She slung her purse over her shoulder and stomped out of the room. Her irritation built with every step. “What is her problem?” Latoya dug her fingers into her purse. “I hope no one in Belize ever treated Cole like that or…”

When she realized what she was mumbling, Latoya went still. Since when did she feel so protective of Cole?

For one thing, any protection she could offer that giant man was laughable. On the inside and out, Cole was an impenetrable mountain and any attempts to inflict pain on him would probably destroy his enemies rather than leave a scratch on him.

For another, she couldn’t afford to let her guard down around Cole. It was already tough to keep herself from impulsively kissing him all the time. If her heart got thrown into the mix, she’d be all over him like white on coconut rice.

Latoya stopped at the door and took a moment to lock those gooey feelings back in the box where they belonged.

Cole was probably here because he needed encouragement to carry out their plan. He didn’t look it, but the guy was a total square. He was probably freaking out at the thought of getting caught.
