Collective hunting is not just a joint activity: it is often an extremely demanding joint activity. The psychology of team sports, and the regular reports in memoirs of line soldiers, show that shared danger and stress in collective activity are immensely affectively powerful (see, e.g., Graves 1929; Keegan 1983; L. MacDonald 1993, 1994; Fraser 2007). Soldiers’ memoirs are particularly telling: they universally emphasize the interaction between group loyalty and combat. The intense experience of combat both generates deep loyalty and can be sustained only because of those ties of loyalty. If hunting is like combat, the mutual experience of hunting and sharing does not signal a preexisting bond of loyalty and attachment that makes trust and trustworthiness likely. Rather, it incrementally creates those psychological bonds. Trust and trustworthiness are both the products of costly, high-arousal activity.
