Proctor! she thought, lunging forward with a mind to retrieve Ren and drag him to safety, but Vasa intercepted once more.

Windel jerked in her grip, eyes tracking Spera’s shider as it took off. She assumed the Imperion was in a similar position as she was right about now - restrained for her own safety. But she couldn’t just leave him there. Her ears were pulsing from the explosion, her hair a staticky mess, throat burning too. If she felt those effects, what did Ren suffer up close?

“This is madness.” Her eyes remained intently on Ren, who was face down and sprawled out as the eldrige puffed its iridescent chest.

Now that the bird had settled in place, Windel could make out its shivering form. The tail that fanned out into seven individual slivers was a magnificent blend of swirling colors. Its beak was black and cosmic, matching its eyes, and everything in between was struggling to maintain shape. The bird appeared to be made mostly of pure energy. Who would want to contend with that?

Windel glimpsed Ren’s finger twitch. “Proctor!”

He groaned as his arms struggled to work again, as he lazily tried to push upright. The eldrige appeared tentative as it inspected

the nearby planeum orb.

Ren got to his feet slowly, every limb shaking. Windel couldn’t tell if the cause was fear or injury, but one thing was for sure by the distorted visuals surrounding the eldrige: it produced a tangible aura that could make all matter around it tremble. “Proctor, stay back!”

Plasmatic feathers straightened as if the bird was alert, or threatened, but soon after, it likely discerned that Ren was harmless.

Its energy waned, feathers folding back into place. Ren smiled at the realization.

The bird bent before the orb with its eyes closed, calm for the first time.

What is it doing?

Ren inched closer, holding one limp arm with the other. He looked more confident than he should, but Windel figured he’d seen this play out before in his esper. At least she hoped.

The pulsing energy around the eldrige calmed with every step Ren took.

“It’s—” Windel was dumbstruck.

“Letting him in.” Vasa finished for her.

Windel leaned closer in anticipation. Why wasn’t he reaching for the orb? What is he— no…

Ren kept his hand extended as he calmly walked past his treasure, into the vicinity of the eldrige. All logic told Windel that he would turn to dust at any second, or burst into flames, but he was still somehow standing.

Windel quickly glanced at Vasa, who was watching on silently.

Then it happened: Ren’s bare hand rested on a plasmatic head. He wasn’t electrocuted to oblivion, or thrown back, or anything. As a matter of fact, Alphonze looked at peace. And when he deemed the time right, he removed his palm and slowly backed away.

The eldrige bowed even further in a show of submission before lunging for the planeum orb and consuming it.

“I don’t believe it.” Windel’s mouth was agape.

“An offering. I’ve dined with my fair share of Seedars, and I know this to be a first step in connecting with a beast.
