Chapter 28

“Chilli, I’ve got an idea!” Jeff sounded pleased with himself.

“Well hello Jeff, how are you?” Her voice warmed the moment she heard his voice.

“I’m great,” and then he rushed on, “But look I’ve been thinking, how about you come to Fraser Island with Tania and me?” His sense of excitement came right through the phone.

There was total silence while she digested what he had said. “What do you mean?”

“I mean come away with us for the three days.” His voice sounded as if he was trying to contain his excitement, but it bubbled out. “Have you ever been to Fraser Island before?”

She was hesitant. “Not for many years...”

“Excellent! How about we reacquaint you with it? We’re going to head up around lunchtime on Friday and be back by late Sunday afternoon. I’ve got to fly back here to Sydney either late on Sunday or first thing on Monday. I know that it’ll be a bit rushed, but we’ll have a great time.”

With him still in Sydney, it had almost been two weeks since she had last seen him, although they had spoken a few times on the phone.

Only the other evening, they had discussed his trip with Tania this coming weekend. After that he had to return to Sydney for the rest of the week. It seemed like it was going to be awhile before she saw him again. At first she was fine with it, after all it had been her idea to take things slowly, but as the days went on, she surprised herself with how keen she was to actually see him again. She hadn’t realised how much a part of her life he had become, and for the longest time she had looked forward to seeing him regularly at Montgomery’s.

But Fraser Island... “Oh Jeff, I don’t know.” Going away for the weekend with him, what would everyone think?

But he’d already read her mind. “If it makes you feel any better, Tania will be there to chaperone.”

“No really, I wasn’t thinking that!” Yeah sure! “It’s just that it is supposed to be your brother sister weekend. You know, just the two of you. Maybe you should check with Tania first?”

“I have or rather she bought it up to me...”

“Oh, so it wasn’t your idea?” she teased.

“It was both of our ideas. Mine more than hers, but she read my mind that’s all,” he laughed. “Come on, what do you think? I know I’m putting you on the spot, but I think that you’d really love it. I do have to warn you though that we will be roughing it a bit. It is a fishing cabin. It’s a step up from camping but only just. You should see the view first thing in the morning. It’ll blow you away. Do you like fishing?”

“Rob liked fishing and I liked watching him fish.”

That didn’t faze him for one minute, and he continued trying hard to convince her. “I know that you like the beach.”

“You know that I love the beach.
