Chapter Seven

I wiped my hands on a napkin and dropped the empty box of fries. With a contented sigh, I flopped against the stack of pillows behind my head and tucked Eden into my side.

“You full?”

She nodded. “Bursting at the seams.”

I scanned her slim frame. She’d eaten half the burger I’d brought for her and about three fries. She’d benefit from a square meal or two. Frank fucking Harris probably starved her to satisfy his client base.

“If you change your mind, I can easily go fetch you something.”

“I’m good.”

I closed my eyes, the lure of sleep not far away. No longer did I have to worry about Eden running from me. She’d accepted that there wasn’t anywhere I couldn’t find her, but despite that, something in her eyes when we’d fucked had told me she didn’t want to run anymore.

“Mav?”

I cracked open one eye. “Yeah, sweetheart?”

“Why was a hit put out on Frank?”

I’d expected this question before now, and so I showed no surprise. Regardless of my exhaustion, she deserved an answer. I turned on my side, bringing us face-to-face. An urge to touch her came over me. I gently caressed her soft cheek, her skin warm beneath my fingers.

“What do you know about his business dealings?”

She hitched up her shoulder. “I know he was into a lot of bad stuff, but he never shared it with me, and I wasn’t stupid enough to ask or go poking around. Frank’s temper was legendary, and I did everything I could to avoid being on the wrong side of it.”

My chest ached for the innocent young girl thrust into a life of horror by a man who’d relished causing pain and suffering. I was no fucking angel, but those I took out deserved everything coming to them, her cocksucker of a husband being a prime example.

“You’re right. He was into a lot of bad stuff. Drugs, sex trafficking, murder. Prostitution and pedophilia. You name it, Frank Harris had his filthy hands all over it. And like a lot of men in his position, he started to believe he was all-powerful, untouchable. Except he wasn’t.”

Her eyes shone with tears that her inner strength wouldn’t allow to fall. “And behind every one of his heinous business dealings lay a victim. An innocent victim.”

I refrained from telling her that not every victim was innocent, but when it came to Frank Harris, a whole fucking lot of them had been. Including the beautiful woman lying beside me. A potent urge to protect her, to ensure nothing bad ever happened to her again, rose within me, filling my chest with a determination that the boss man wouldn’t find out a damned thing. And even if he did, I was in far too deep to ever allow myself to put the butt of a gun to Eden’s temple and pull the trigger.

“Lost in his own hype, he decided to muscle in on a slice of territory that wasn’t his. He thought he had enough muscle to get in and out of the deal with his balls intact.
