Playfair supported what Grosse said and mentioned that he saw the box hit Grosse, but not when it took off. The box was made of “floppy” cardboard and would have required two hands to pick it up. He further commented that he had been talking to the “entity” downstairs just prior to the incident and had said to it “Do you realize that you are dead”? Playfair challenged Janet’s physical flexibility when he found the double bed up-ended against the wall. After he remarked to Janet that she “couldn’t have done that” she put her knee under it and did “just that”!

Reports by visitors to the Hodgson establishment as a result of letters sent to them by the committee.

It will not be possible, here, to include the full testimonies of all the people who submitted reports to the SPR Committee and, once again, I would advise anyone wanting further information to consult the ‘The Report of the Enfield Poltergeist Investigation Committee (EPIC)’. In addition to those presented below, reports were received from John Rainbow and David Robertson, which have not been included since their testimonies have already been presented in the sections on the recorded phenomena, as have much of what was reported by the local witnesses. Tony Cornell wrote a very detailed account of his visit, which has not been made publically available to date (2019). However, I possess a copy of this report and it is highly critical of the investigation. He felt that they interpreted everything that happened as resulting from some form of “discarnate intervention”. He thought that this attitude could produce “biased and misleading accounts”, which would be detrimental to making a “balanced assessment” of the case.

Mr. John Stiles

John Stiles visited the Hodgson household on 13 January 1978, with Mary Rose Barrington and Peter Hallson, all prominent members of the SPR. The family was present, excluding Maurice Grosse and John Burcombe who arrived later. Most of the time was devoted to Mrs Hodgson relating the various incidents that had happened. He was impressed by “all those questioned” being “clear and detailed” and found Mrs Hodgson to be both “sensible and sincere”. He heard the “Voice” “coming from the vicinity of Janet – an unpleasant sleazy masculine voice uttering various obscenities”. He found it surprising, but believed “she could have produced it” and evidently Janet had spoken about having a sore throat after “prolonged manifestations of the “Voice”. Stiles then commented on what Barrington and Hallson experienced there and added that he felt that Janet could have wrapped the curtain around her own throat when this phenomenon happened… as it frequently did. He concluded, “In my opinion all
