The girls were playing outside, and Remi was in his bouncer in the corner, so Ailin and I were straightening up before dinner.

“Why are there no burp cloths left?” Ailin asked as he searched every inch of the living room like one might magically appear out of thin air.

I glared at him. “Do you remember when I asked you to flip the laundry yesterday?”

He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Motherfucker.”

“Yeah, A, you fucking forgot to put the load in the dryer, so now we’re out of burp cloths! And out of bibs! Bibs, A. You know how messy he gets when he’s shoving food in his face.” I didn’t mean to yell, but it had been a frustrating day because apparently it was No-One-Listens-To-Papa-Day, and I was about to lose it. Or maybe I already had.

Ailin cringed. “I forgot.”

I threw my arms up in frustration. “Of course you did. You haven’t done it the last two times I asked, so why would I expect anything different this time?”

“I’m sorry.”

“That does me a hell of a lot of good right now, doesn’t it? You haven’t been helping me at all.” I stormed into the kitchen and may have started slamming cabinet doors as I got myself a glass of water… I should’ve just grabbed the wine, but it was a little early for that.

“I said I’m sorry!” he yelled.

“Good for you, asshole!”

“I’m pretending you said ‘it’s okay, asshole’ instead.”

I rolled my eyes and flipped him off, not that he could see me.

“I know you’re flipping me off.”

“Good!”

He sighed and—wisely—left me alone to go grab Remi and take him outside.
