Chapter 18

Sadie was in seventh heaven. “Seriously? Yes! When Marley told me what you were discussing, I almost lost my mind. This is a dream come true!”

Sadie beamed. Sadie was practically vibrating with nervous energy. “This is so exciting,” she whispered. “I’ve never traveled back in time before. I’ve heard temporal witches talk about it, but I always thought it was absolutely forbidden for other magical practitioners.”

“It’s an unconventional move, but it makes sense. Eleanor and I have operated as a team for many years. At the moment, Marley is the only temporal witch of her generation—but your spellcasting abilities complement her abilities nicely. We’ve also been impressed by your passion for history.”

At that point, I noticed Clara had brought a cake with her. “Even though it’s spur of the moment, I thought we should be prepared to celebrate.”

Oddly enough, I was hungry again. Eleanor had been right. It felt like my entire breakfast had burned off already, probably over the sixty-some years we traveled that morning.

As Eleanor sliced and served the triple-layer red velvet dessert, Clara outlined the rules of time travel.

“First, you must maintain history’s integrity. Don’t try to change the course of events. Don’t interfere with the sequence of events. No messing with the timeline.”

“I would never!” Sadie exclaimed.

“Second, you may not remove artifacts that would be missed in their own time.”

“I might need direction on that one. Collecting antiques is one of my passions.”

Eleanor nodded. “We can help you with that.”

“Third, don’t interfere with the flow of time by revealing information about the future.”

“Understood.”

“For your first few trips together, your time will be limited, and you’ll be closely monitored.”

I leaned forward. “So we can go back to the Stevens Mansion?”

“You’ll have thirty minutes, total, to look around. This isn’t a chance for you to investigate or ask questions. It’s a training exercise, so you can get a feel for visiting consequential moments in history.”

Clara furrowed her brow intently. “And just to make sure nothing goes awry, you’ll be traveling with a chaperone.”

“You mean, with you? Or are you talking about Eleanor?”

“No, that would defeat the purpose of letting you test the waters without us. You’ll be accompanied by one of our other trusted partners here at the shop.”

With that, a soft whisper of air blew into the room. I turned around to see a small point of light growing larger, like an iridescent bubble filling with cosmic energy. It was illuminated from within, and as it grew, it pulsed with all the colors of the rainbow. I watched, mesmerized, as it cast beams of light throughout the shop. Red, orange, green, yellow, and blue … and then it popped, and Violet stood in front of us.

“Hello, besties!” She greeted us with a mischievous grin, her voice tinged with excitement. “I hear we’re going on an adventure.”

I looked at my grandmother. “Seriously? Violet is our chaperone?”

She put her hands on her hips. “Would it be easier to think of me as your caretaker?” Then she laughed. “Maybe you should refer to me as your guardian and protector.
