Ybelline entered Elluvianâs office first; Severn followed her.
âWait one minute,â a familiarâand annoyedâvoice said. Severn considered closing the door anyway, but the voice was the Wolflordâs. He therefore held it open as Lord Marlin stopped in its frame.
âWhat are you doing here?â he demanded. The question was aimed in its entirety at Ybelline.
It was Severn who answered. âShe has come as a member of theââ
âI can see what sheâs wearing, and I didnât ask you. Iâm having more than enough difficulty with an ornery Garadin; I donât need further complications.â
âThe Emperor,â Ybelline said, her voice almost serene, âhas given his personal permission for this interview.â
âHis personal permission.â
âYes. It was required. Saidh considered the request unusual.â
Helmat snorted.
âHe is very efficient at what he does, and heâs one of the few men the Emperor trusts completely.â
âOne could say the same of a corpse.â
âCorpses are not efficient, Helmat.â
âTheyâre efficient at being dead. Mankev resembles them.â
Ybelline said nothing. Severn thought, from both her words and this silence, that she liked Mankev. But it was Ybelline who finally broke that silence. âSaidh cannot be bribed. He cannot be threatened. He does his job completely without flexibility.â
âHe canât be bribed because he doesnât have normal, human desires,â Helmat snapped. âAnd if he called in the Emperorââ
âHe did, of course. I explained the need. He agreed that it was possibly necessary, but he didnât feel he had the authority to step outside of the bounds of the Service. Or perhaps he didnât feel I had the requisite authority to do so.â
âWhat, exactly, did the private request?â
âInformation.â
âYbelline, I have had an extremely trying day.â
âIf you wish to know, you will have to ask Saidh for that information. I am empowered only to speak to Severn, and only in the manner of my kin.â Her eyes were now almost gold.
âYou realize the private is on probation?â
Her smile deepened. âI do. But the Wolves serve the Emperor. Even those on probation. What the Emperor commands, your private will have to obeyâjust as you would in a similar situation.â
âWhat information is he allowed to share?â
âAt the moment, none.â
This surprised Severn.
âWeâll see about that.â Helmat stepped out of the doorway.
âHeâs going to mirror the Imperial Service,â Severn said, voice low.
âI know.â
âYou like the Wolflord.â
âI do. But I also like Saidh. Everything Iâve said is true: he is trusted. He cannot be bribedâIâm not sure the purpose of a bribe even makes sense to him. He is rock solid, and he is much easier for me to deal with than his predecessor.â Here, her eyes shaded toward hazel.
âIs his predecessor still alive?â
âNo. Except in memory, I will never have to deal with him again. And,â she added, âthat was something that Saidh would never say, and I should not have. I believe it is considered poor manners to speak ill of the dead.â
âIt isnât for the Thaâalani?â
âNo, but it wouldnât be. The dead are still alive in some fashion within the Thaâalaan. We can see the whole of their lives.â She sat in one of the two chairs that fronted Elluvianâs mostly unused service desk.
