As soon as they exited the Gavios shop, Tyrran began walking in the direction of the bindery he had first spotted on their way into town.

“Tyrran,” Ris yelled at him, “please try to remember that you have no idea where you are going. We will be heading this way,” he said, pointing in the opposite direction.

Tyrran hesitated. “It’s just that I saw a bindery in this direction on our way here.”

“That is the one bindery in all of Smallchapel Reach, and it pales in comparison to the binderies on Bindery Row in Whitetemple, which is where we’re going. It’s just a few quick blocks from there to the haberdasheries and tunicmongers in Lowcrossing, and finally we can end the shopping portion of the day in Grand Regent Park. The park itself is a delight, but more importantly my favorite perfumer and drinkery are located there and I’m running dangerously low on both perfume and gin.”

“Oh,” was all Tyrran could say in response. The idea of an entire row of binderies made him faint. And their other destinations, though maybe not as exciting for Tyrran, sounded interesting all the same.

Ris and Nyri engaged in their usual verbal sparring as they made their way to Bindery Row, while Trudis explained to Tyrran the little she knew about the neighborhoods they were passing through. They were travelling toward the center of the city and the streets became more and more crowded as they went along. The buildings were also taller. The streets around Mister Gavios’s shop were bordered by two and three-floor buildings, but now four-floor buildings were quite common.

They were still in the more affluent parts, or so Tyrran assumed, given the expensive overcloaks worn by people on the walkways and the types of shops they were passing. Tyrran was amazed at the very specific types of merchandise sold in many of the shops. They passed one shop that sold only maps, another that offered only walking sticks, and another that specialized in portmanteaus of all shapes and sizes. All of these items could be purchased in Hifield city, of course, but in general shops rather than specialized boutiques. And the options in Hifield city were greatly limited; at most one could choose between two only slightly different items.

The shops were not the only places of commerce. Every street corner was crowded with women and girls—and a few men and boys—selling flowers, newspapers, fruit and vegetable pies, and even clothing.

Diversity abounded not just in retail, but in the people themselves. Tyrran saw quite a few wealthy Silacians—were there any other kind, he wondered—out for a day of shopping. According to Ris, there were a great many Silacians living in Corvit. Most of them were merchants, serving as Silacian company representatives in Coar. Often these merchants brought their husbands and children to Corvit as well, deeming the city just civilized enough to raise a family in. The Silacians carried themselves elegantly. The women wore brightly colored tunics and were typically adorned with jewelry, while the men wore colorful blouses and tights.
