Chapter Seventeen
Ben was so quiet on our way back, I had to keep looking behind me to check that he was still there.
âI canât believe I was so naïve,â he mumbled. âI really believed him. Everything Iâve worked for is a lie.â
âDonât be so hard on yourself,â I said.
âWhat else is there for me to do? Iâve spent my life trying to emulate him, thinking he was the most altruistic person ever.â He made a throaty, grunting sound. âAll along, he was just serving himself.â
âAnd the family. Iâm sure he means to share his research with his offspring.â
Ben laughed. It was a hard laugh. âSo, I get to live forever and watch all the people around me die a slow death.â
It was difficult to feel sorry for him. Heâd lived a privileged life, lacking in nothing. I couldnât help thinking that the good heâd been doing, while convincing himself that it was for the good of everyone, might just have been enough to ease his own conscience. Now that he knew it was all for show, meant only to keep the masses happy, I couldnât pity him. After all, heâd used that privilege to justify killing all those Rejs.
But I had a part to play, too.
âI feel so useless,â he continued.
I stepped in front of him, making him stop in his tracks. âDo you want to do something about it?â I had to try. Maybe somewhere in this privileged brain, there lurked a modicum of goodness.
He pondered my question, chewing on the side of his lip. âIf it saves my mother, then yes, I do.â The determined look in his eye told me he was telling the truth. âBut what can we do in one night? After tomorrow morning, weâll be prisoners, watched at all times.â
âI have an idea,â I said, treading carefully. I couldnât reveal too much because he still hated the Rejs, and he couldnât know that they were already in the Greens, about to wreak their havoc. âIf we can get proof of R.L.âs actual work, show the people here in the Labs and in the Geos that Farrow Corp isnât concerned about their future, but only R.L.âs and his inner circle, it might be enough to stir them into action. At the very least, theyâll want to remove R.L. from his position of power.â I didnât add that the people in the Geos already knew this and were already on board with the plan. But maybe, if I could make Ben think this was all his idea, carrying out the plan would be easier.
Benâs eyes narrowed in thought as we continued our path back to our apartment. Two clones walked past us. Dressed in the silver uniforms that matched their hair, they walked with their eyes forward, with no expression.
Involuntarily, I gasped.
âWhat is it?â Ben asked.
âNothing,â I said. Of course, the male clones all looked alike, and I hadnât checked the nametag, but for a split second, Iâd thought one of those whoâd just passed us was Dax.
