CHAPTER 33

Ruwen found Sift staring at the two men, and Lylan stood with her back to Sift’s. They all stood near the front of church but off to the side and out of sight of the main sanctuary.

“Which one of you is Gunder?” Sift asked.

Gunder briefly raised a hand and nodded at the Mage who walked to an empty pew twenty feet away.

Sift nodded at Gunder, his face neutral. “He’s here.”

Lylan emerged from behind Sift but remained next to him. Lylan and Gunder stood six feet apart.

Gunder gasped and then a sound like a strangled cry escaped him. “What sorcery is this?” he whispered.

Ruwen stepped to the spot halfway between them. “As Uru’s Champion I have access to some of the temple’s records, including ancestry data. I’ve confirmed Lylan is your granddaughter nine times over.”

Gunder and Lylan had locked eyes. Lylan’s face remained neutral, but Gunder looked in physical pain.

Lir, you have permission to stop any type of attack on Sift or Lylan here in the church.

Understood.

Ruwen spoke to Gunder. “I thought you might be interested that your wife and children survived the god wars, and that, in fact, the past isn’t the only place where your family remains.”

Ruwen gave Sift a nod, touched Lylan’s shoulder, and strode away. In Chat he spoke to Sift. I’ll have Lir watch too, but yell if anything dangerous happens.

Will do. Thanks again.

Ruwen would catch up with Sift later to learn how this meeting went, but right now he needed to prepare for his journey north. Uru’s Shadow had a trip to make.
