Punctured Lung (Pneumothorax): Take, as a proven example, the oft-practiced black art of sentry elimination, taught to commandos of World War II. A human’s lungs are attached to the spine and back wall of the ribcage by the pleural sac. A short-bladed knife driven into the pectorals of, especially, a heavily muscled man (like James Bowie) is likely to inflict a relatively minor would—literally a “flesh wound,” as TV shows have long been fond of calling such injuries.
Professional soldiers have known since Biblical times that a slender blade can easily punch though the protection of a rib cage to almost instantly put an enemy out of commission by disabling his ability to breathe.
Contrarily, a three-inch blade punched into the side or back of its victim’s ribcage will probably penetrate through to a lung, perforating the air sac, and causing it to collapse. A collapsed lung (pneumothorax), even just one of them, all or partially, is sufficient to decrease blood pressure to dangerous levels, and make it difficult or impossible to breathe. Air inside the torso, trapped outside the lung, can exert pressure against the heart muscle, as can blood trapped inside the area (hemothorax), causing cardiac failure, leading to death. In short, an average-size folding knife can topple the largest man with a single blow over a relatively large area of its victim’s upper torso. A strong man who cannot breathe, who loses consciousness from hypotension (low blood pressure), or experiences a cardiac event is unlikely to be willing or able to continue to fight.
