Long after he’d made several attempts at making her feel better and promising to give her the jewelry box one day, and promising to come back soon, and promising a dozen other things Darcy knew would never come true… she opened the letter from inside the box.

“I want you to have this. I don’t understand what you’re going through, and why you can’t just be like everyone else, but I want you to know I haven’t forgotten you. Love, Mom.”

Those words, and the simple emotion they carried with them, surprised her. The tear that finally fell down her cheek surprised her even more. Sitting on her bed, she felt eyes watching her from the doorway. Looking up she found Great Aunt Millie standing there. She held out her arms, and Darcy ran into them. She held Darcy until the crying stopped, and then even longer.

“Come along, dear,” she said finally. “I heard you had a rough day. Come and have a cup of tea with me and tell me all about it.”
