Chapter 8: Going back down.
Jonas watched from the porch as Billâs familiar car turned into the driveway, crunching gravel under its tiresâa reassuring sound that told him Bill had arrived. He felt a mix of anticipation and anxiety; today's conversation could change everything. Christie, sensing his tension, gave him a reassuring kiss before retreating into the house to keep their new friends, Boali and Tillu, from being noticed from the outside.
As Billâs car came to a halt, he stepped out, the afternoon sun casting long shadows behind him. âGood afternoon, Bill,â Jonas greeted, trying to keep his voice even.
Bill, in his typical straightforward manner, took a seat across from Jonas at the rustic outdoor table and didnât bother with small talk. âOK, spit it out,â he said, his voice firm and expectant.
Jonas hesitated for a moment, then pushed a heavy, metal box across the table towards Bill. âThere's over $300,000 worth of gold in there,â he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Billâs eyes widened as he lifted the lid, his gaze locking onto the gleaming coins inside. âYou said 30 or 40 lbs,â he murmured, astonished.
Jonas nodded, his face serious. âAnd thereâs more inside,â he added, hinting at the depth of the hidden cache.
Bill looked up, his expression turning inquisitive. âWhy come to me with this?â he asked.
âHonestly?â Jonas paused, needing to choose his words carefully. Bill nodded, prompting him to continue. âYouâre the only one, besides Kelly and Christie, that I trust,â Jonas confessed.
Bill chuckled, shaking his head slightly. âIâm a cop, for fuckâs sake,â he remarked, half in jest and half in disbelief.
Jonas leaned forward, his gaze intense. âAnd youâve always been honest with me,â he countered.
âYou mentioned you know a guy,â Jonas pressed, noticing Billâs hesitation.
Bill sighed, a sound of resignation mixed with understanding. âYes, heâs a lawyer, and his brother deals in special jewelry and gold,â he explained.
âAnd you trust them?â Jonas probed, needing to be sure of every step they took.
âIâve known him for 40 years, and his brother tooâ Bill affirmed, his tone firm. âHe might be a little unconventional, but heâs always straight up. If I tell him to treat you right, he will,â he assured Jonas.
Jonas, his curiosity piqued, ventured further. âAnd if you tell him weâre talking about 40 lbs of gold and over a thousand gemstones, with more possibly to come?â he asked, laying all his cards on the table.
Billâs expression turned serious, his frown deepening. âYou said that, now I have to askâwhere does all this come from?â he inquired, his tone mixing professional duty with personal concern.
Jonas took a deep breath, knowing this was the moment of truth. He had to trust Bill, not just as a law officer, but as a friend. âItâs a long story,â he began, his voice steady. âLet's just say, the house came with a few unexpected treasures hidden in places you wouldnât imagine.â
As Jonas spoke, Bill listened with a mixture of disbelief and curiosity. He had heard about hidden treasure, but a hidden world right under Jonasâs house was a step further into the surreal.
