She sent it, scowling at her phone, and muttered, “Asshole.”

“Hey, your furry friend’s gonna port us outta here, right?” Tate called. “Never thought I’d miss that rock they call a mattress on the base, but it sounds pretty fucking good right now.”

“Give me a minute.” Cheyenne nodded briefly at him, then pulled up Maleshi’s number instead.

The general picked up almost immediately. “That was fast.”

“What?”

“You found the flame guy, right?”

Cheyenne grimaced. “No. Haven’t looked anymore today.”

“Oh.” Maleshi’s voice was flat when she asked, “So, what’s up?”

“You have a minute to come and port a few magicals out of the middle of nowhere?”

“Cheyenne.”

“Maleshi.”

The general let out a long, exaggerated sigh. “I told you, I’m up to my eyeballs in grading undergrad papers that make me wanna kill myself.”

“Yeah, I know. Corian was supposed to be available for the nightstalker express, but he decided not to answer his phone. I can’t exactly carry four friends with certain proprietary tech behind their ears all the way back to Richmond.”

Maleshi hissed, followed by the loud rustle of paper and the rumble of her desk chair’s wheels rolling across the plastic mat. “Fine. Where are you?”

“I’ll send you a map pin. Oh, he made a ward bubble or whatever around this field we’re in.”

“You know how insulting that is? Of course I can pick through Corian’s wards.” Maleshi hung up, and Cheyenne raised her eyebrows at her phone’s home screen before setting her current GPS location on a map and texting it over.

I hit the jackpot for nightstalkers in shitty moods today.

She shoved her phone into her pocket and headed back toward the agents, who were still rubbing their sore joints and brushing dirt and grass off their standard-issue black fatigues.

Bhandi eyed the drow, and her smile faded. “You look pissed.”

“Just hungry.”

“Oh, yeah.” Yurik rubbed his hands together and grinned. “Man, I could go for half-pounder with cheese and bacon.”

“Or we could skip the meal and go straight to the… Hey.” Bhandi pointed behind Cheyenne at the window of dark light opening in the air. “Our chariot awaits.”

“Man, we should get a nightstalker on the team,” Tate said, staring at the growing portal. “You know how much time we’d save in transport between ops if we had portals?” He pointed at Maleshi as she stepped onto the field with them. “That’s not the guy who dropped us off.”

“Cute, Cheyenne.” Maleshi spread her arms and cocked her head. “Your friends have real top-notch observation skills.”

“Who are you?” Bhandi asked.

The general stared at the troll, then raised her hands to open a new portal as the old one closed behind her. “I don’t have time for this. Where are we going?”

“Union Hill paid parking,” Cheyenne muttered, then frowned at Bhandi. “She was there with everyone else when we planned the whole prison break. You seriously don’t remember?”

Bhandi shrugged and didn’t say anything as she avoided eye contact.

The portal to the parking lot opened, and Maleshi stormed through without bothering to tell anyone it was time.

“Just get through the portal.
