Chapter 11: A Dreamer’s Wings
Kai was initially worried about Lindsay’s reaction. He knew that once she found out about everything he was purposefully keeping from her, she wouldn’t be very pleased at all. But after the five short minutes he spent telling her what he knew and what Alastor had been teaching him, he remembered just how impossible it was for Lindsay to stay annoyed.
“So basically you don’t really know much more than I do, but you’re training your imagination in case something does come up?” Lindsay asked, attempting to make sense of everything he told her.
“Pretty much,” Kai confirmed, hoping that now she understood, she wouldn’t be as irritated.
“Okay!” Lindsay replied cheerfully. “I don’t see why you didn’t just tell me before. But now that I know, I hope you can understand when I say I’m coming with you to see Alastor next time whether he likes it or not. I haven’t seen Elvia in ages, and it’s not fair that you get lessons and I don’t!”
Two days later, Kai was still marveling at Lindsay’s acceptance. He had always felt bad whenever he had to keep anything from her, and even though in this case he had been told by Alastor to withhold this information, Kai wondered why he simply didn’t go against his wishes. As his best friend and someone he helped bring to the Sanctum in the first place, Lindsay deserved to know everything he did, even if it wasn’t much.
As Professor Kawamari still wasn’t back in class during the first half of that week, Kai didn’t bother paying much attention in class. His mind was preoccupied, both by what was currently going on in the Sanctum as well as what Kawamari was up to. Kai had seen him protesting outside the hospital, but that couldn’t have been taking all his time. Then again, Kawamari was a kind-hearted man, so perhaps he had simply found something to be passionate about.
As soon as school let out that Wednesday afternoon, Kai left campus immediately; the professor who was subbing for Kawamari annoyed him. After a few failed attempts at creative writing assignments, she had decided to skip them completely and instead start working on history lessons.
“This lady has no imagination,” one of Kai’s classmates had whispered to him during one of the professor’s efforts at a writing prompt. Everyone around her nodded in agreement, and Kai made a mental note to talk to Kawamari the next time they met in the Sanctum.
During the walk home, Lindsay did most of the talking as usual. Today she had brought Kai some leftover cookies from a party they had in class, and they finished the plate together. As they walked past the hospital, Kai noticed that no one was there this time.
“So I can’t wait for this weekend,” Lindsay exclaimed, tossing the empty plate into a nearby trash bin. “I’ve heard so much about this light festival. It’s really not fair that we have to wait two more days. Elvia was getting me all excited, then she started making fun of me when she saw how anxious I was.
