Chapter 11
KATERINA
Every time I tried to tell Lucian I was pregnant, the words stuck in my throat. At first, it was simply fear of losing him that stifled my voice. What if telling him ruined everything? Weâd reached the month-long milestone in our relationship with hardly any hiccups.
Then, as time went on, I was embarrassed that Iâd said nothing, and it became even harder to broach the subject. How was I going to tell him? The right words just werenât coming to me. We got along so well. Everything felt so good. So... right.
I desperately wanted to tell him, I really did. But it had been so long now, I felt stuck. Three weeks passed quickly and I remained silent. I worked with my kids and Lucian worked on projects around the house. Every day he updated something. It wouldnât have surprised me if I came home one day, and heâd decided to gut the kitchen and start fresh.
I was just glad he had found something that he seemed to enjoy.
As the weeks passed, my morning sickness grew stronger, and my exhaustion became harder to ignore. I thought for sure Lucian would put two and two together, but he didnât.
He noticed I often wasnât feeling well, but he wasnât hugely familiar with my life or that of normal humans, so I guess he assumed that tiredness was a normal condition for me. After all, we hadnât spent much time together before heâd moved in. Not to say he ignored my health, quite the opposite. He asked me often if I felt okay, and if I was sick. Not once did he ask if I was pregnant, and I still hadnât told him.
âYou need to eat,â I whispered to myself as I stared down at the lunch I had brought to work with me. Once again the food was going to go uneaten.
I didnât know what to do, and wanted to ask my sisters for help. But Sarah was likely busy being a new wife, and Nadia hardly answered her phone. The reception in the other realm seemed to be terrible. Though Iâd been able to get through once or twice, I could barely hear her voice, and vice versa. It became easier not to even try calling, in the end.
If they knew I was in such inner turmoil, they wouldnât ignore me, of that I was sure. Part of me didnât want to say anything anyway, because I knew theyâd side with Lucian. It was so easy for them to tell me not to worry. Theyâd never known rejection like I had.
I gazed at my lunch, wishing I could will myself to eat. So far, Iâd dropped three pounds. The internet said that losing weight was normal in the beginning of a pregnancy, so I tried not to worry about the baby too much. If a human baby sucked up a lot of energy from its mom, then I imagined a half-dragon baby might deplete even more.
âI have to tell him this weekend,â I mumbled to myself and rubbed at my forehead with a hand.
