Chapter 18

Avery

When Jasper started to take his clothes off, I wasn’t sure what he was planning. I am actually excited and apprehensive about seeing his dragon. Before I can get too lost in my own head, the air around Jasper shimmers. It almost looks like the distortion you see coming from hot asphalt in the middle of summer. After several seconds I can see his form changing. He is getting bigger and bigger and his dragon is taking shape.

When he is done, there is a thirty-foot dragon in front of me. He is beautiful. His scales are black with a red and purple pearlescence to them. They change color depending on how the light hits them. I can feel the smile on my face getting bigger the longer I look at him.

I am still looking him over when suddenly I am nose to nose with Jasper’s dragon. It startles me a little, since I wasn’t paying attention. I slowly reach my hand out and touch the scales along the bridge of his nose. I can feel him rumble under my fingertips. Now I understand where the woodsmoke smell was coming from. He is putting off a lot of heat.

Jasper lowers the front part of his body to the ground and motions towards his shoulder, with his nose. Does he want me to climb on top of him? I must have hesitated because the next thing I know wings unfurl from his back. I didn’t even notice them before. The underside doesn’t have scales, and his wings have the consistency similar to a bat. Since I didn’t move, he uses his wing to try and coax me to climb up on his back.

I finally give in and start working my way up his front leg and on to his back. He uses his wing to help me. Once I am up there, Jasper looks over his shoulder to make sure I am seated, then takes off. It caught me off guard and I let out a scream. After several minutes in the air, I start to relax. I know Jasper won’t let anything happen to me. It is beautiful up here. I can see, what I am sure are several states. Since this part of the country is mostly flat that is a pretty safe assumption. I see a lake in the distance. Cars look like little ants.

I am not sure how long we were flying but I can tell we are getting closer to the ground. We finally get back to where his bike is and he lands, helping me down. That was one of the best experiences I have ever had.

I walk back next to his bike and Jasper shifts back to his human form. I think his smile is actually bigger than mine is. As he starts walking towards me, I start running towards him. I jump up and wrap my arms around his neck and legs around his waist. I totally forgot the fact he was naked until I feel something hard poking at me.
