CHAPTER 23

SATURDAY, AUGUST 26

When Paisley woke up, she looked out the bedroom window, noting dark clouds gathering to make it a gray day. Perfect for a depressing funeral, she thought. She heard noise from pots and pans coming from Millie's kitchen, along with the aroma of bacon and coffee. She put on her robe and went toward the kitchen, thinking how much she wanted a hot cup of coffee. She hadn't slept well, because of waking up frequently from bad dreams she couldn't quite remember.

"Come…sit," Millie said, dished up some bacon and eggs, and placed it on the table for Paisley, along with a hot cup of coffee. She set a plate of food and coffee for herself and sat across from Paisley.

"This is perfect," Paisley said, and began eating. When she finished her eggs, Millie handed her the morning paper.

"Uh-oh! What now?"

"Look in section two," Millie suggested.

Paisley took out Section two, called Around Town, and there it was!

IS DETECTIVE INGLES USING FORTUNE COOKIES TO SOLVE MURDERS?

Last night, Pinecrest's own Detective Ingles was seen dining with friends at a local Chinese restaurant. Apparently, her group was intensely interested in the fortunes from the fortune cookies, and spent a lot of time in quiet discussion over them. Is this what the Detective is using to help solve the two murders in our community? Our sources tell us that an unknown gentleman delivered a special cookie to someone on the restaurant's staff, who was to make sure it was put by Detective Ingles' plate. Who is sending covert messages to her via fortune cookies? This Reporter is going to investigate! Meanwhile, Deedrick Boone, her partner in the Kamorov Murder Case, flew out of town this weekend. Did they have a spat? Is he jealous of Detective Federico Franco—her new partner?

Slamming the paper down on the table, she said, "That does it— Millie—this has got to stop! It could be putting my life and my job in danger. If Detective Ryan sees this, he could take me off the case!"

"I know, I know," Millie said, "but it's so interesting, and don't forget—you are a famous person," she wheedled, "and people enjoy knowing what you're doing."

"I don't care! On Monday, I'm calling this reporter and demanding her to come to the office because we're going to have a little ‘chat'! She must be stalking me and you, Millie, to find out this stuff! Maybe it was her car you thought you saw following us. I bet she even got our waitress to divulge information about the ‘mysterious' fortune cookie!"

"I guess I didn't think about it that way," Millie replied. "Maybe you're right, and she might even be putting Sue in danger too, by revealing so much!"

A little later, Paisley and Millie drove to the church, met Sue at the appointed time, and looked over the refreshment set up as indicated in Olga Shenkovsky's will. Since the service was held at the mortuary, the three of them drove there and helped set up chairs as people began arriving.
