Morning dawned far too soon for Errebeld. He groaned and tried to hide his face from the light. Vibrations disturbed the water around him, and he sat up to see what had created so much movement. The dragonet swam laps around the cave, making excited chirps and grunts when his eyes met Errebeld’s.

“Good morning, Zakazely. Are you ready to hunt?”

“Hunt.” The baby said the word as perfectly as any person, and Errebeld struggled to contain his shock. He closed his mouth with a snap and grinned.

“That’s right. Hunt. But only for a little while. Then we’re going on a little adventure.”

Keird slung his pack over his shoulder and waved to the baby. “Come, Zakazely. Hunt.”

The dragonet darted out of the cave and dove straight for the brilliant schools of fish overhead. He played and screeched and ate, and Errebeld couldn’t help but enjoy the baby’s fun, even though it meant that fish were dying in scores. A tiny pang of guilt shot through him at the thought, but he brushed it aside.

Animals hunted other animals every day. That’s the world Dalphein had made, and Errebeld would claim no responsibility for the dragon doing as he was made to.

Zakazely hunted and ate and played for well over an hour before Keird called him. Errebeld didn’t expect the baby to react to the noise or his name and had to close his gaping mouth when the dragonet swam slowly away from the colorful clouds of fish.

“Hunt.” The baby said as soon as he approached. He turned back to the fish.

“No.” Errebeld waited for the baby to turn back to him. “We need to travel a bit. We’ll hunt more when we get some distance behind us.”

The dragonet cocked its head and regarded Errebeld with a soft brown eye. “What travel?”

“It’s an adventure. Come let me show you.”

Zakazely let out an excited coo and swam close to Errebeld, who took off at a leisurely pace toward the westerly route that would lead them to Belzon. Instead of joining the throngs of travelers, Errebeld swam parallel to the current, but far enough away that he couldn’t see the other supaerisi.

The novelty of new places and views kept Zakazely close for the first hour. That ended when a cluster of blue fish nearly as large as Errebeld swam overhead. The dragonet dashed toward the fish, snagged one, and crunched it down in two bites.

“Dalphein save me from infants.” Errebeld eyed the red cloud, the only sign of Zakazely’s meal. “Let’s get out of here before the sharks show up.”

“This way.” Keird waved a hand toward a narrow gap in the rocks, where they could shelter and let the baby rest — and avoid any predators drawn by the blood.

They settled down between the boulders, and the dragonet fell asleep in seconds.

“D’you think he’s ready for this? How do we keep him from hunting whenever he sees a fish? Or worse, another supaerisi?”

“He is ready. He comes when called. We must call him faster.” Keird nodded as if it were the most obvious statement he’d ever made, but Errebeld wasn’t so sure.
