A few more hours passed before my dragon hunted me down, dropping to the ground beside me and the hellhound I’d started to think of as mine. Neither of us had moved an inch since we sat down; me, too exhausted, and him not wanting to lose the head scratches.

Kadoc lifted me off the ground and set me between his thighs. I leaned my back to his chest, my eyes closing as his arms wrapped around me. When my hellhound grumbled at me, I lifted my hand off Kadoc’s thigh and scratched the hound’s ears again, much to my dragon’s amusement.

Kadoc had left me to my own thoughts for the most part, only nudging me with calm feelings any time I started to feel stressed or get worked up about anything related to my sisters.

The other dragons walked with Kadoc. The mated ones scooped their exhausted vampires up and hauled them toward the tower; none of them were ready to take on the monsters without a few hours of sleep. The unmated dragons offered to carry the rest of the vampires up, and then they were headed toward the tower too.

Kadoc and I didn’t budge, though.

“You’re pushing yourself too hard,” Kadoc grumbled at me, his grip on my torso firm as he held me to his chest.

“Sounds like someone else I know,” I mumbled back.

Skies, my eyelids were heavy.

“How long until the vampires will be ready?”

“I don’t know,” I admitted, letting my eyes close as I relaxed further against Kadoc. “Clea and Jak are the strongest two right now. She can manage a few monsters, at least well enough to keep them from reaching Dranoa if they break my hold. I think. He can help, though without being fully mated, the stronger creatures are a big challenge.”

“Mmm.” Kadoc didn’t sound thrilled by my answer.

“After they’ve had time to rest, we’ll have to test it out. I’m tired,” I mumbled.

“I can distract you, if you’d like.” My dragon’s lips brushed the underside of my chin. “My smoke usually revs you right up.”

My lips curved upward in a slight smile. “Does it?”

The air slowly grew a bit smoky, the scent of Kadoc’s desire making my mind even hazier than it had been.

“Everyone can see us,” I warned him, my body growing warmer as desire rolled through me.

“There’s an ocean. If you—”

“Let’s go,” I breathed.

His eyes gleamed when he scooped me up and launched into the sky, shooting toward the nearest beach in less than a heartbeat.
