After we were all stuffed and slightly tipsy, we were offered a tour of the facility. The fields were a marvel of engineering this high in the mountains, and the machines they used to process everything were massive and complicated like nothing I’d seen before. In one of the highest plateaus, instead of a field, there was an enormous set of sigils carved into the very rock. I thought Revana’s scale-binding had been complex, but this was a few orders of magnitude more complicated. I was instantly relieved I wouldn’t be the one trying to activate it on my own.

Afterwards, we were given some time for ourselves. Tiq, naturally, had an endless slew of questions she wanted answered, but Revana and I parked ourselves on an ornate balcony. It was built into the edge of one of the peaks that overlooked an extremely sharp cliff that faced away from the First province and Telorn.

“So, this is the plan now?” I asked.

“Hmm?”

“We’re here to summon the dragon. I highly doubt that was part of the Mulaq’Shae’s original plan.”

She shook her head with heavily lidded eyes. “Well, after the empire’s completely unexpected response, or lack thereof, to what we did to the sigilarium, we’re at a loss. We’d expected word to be racing across the realm by now, stoking the fires of rebellion. At this point, I think bringing a dragon back into the world is our best bet to accomplish that. And I’ll admit that…I just want it. For me.

“Anyway, everything since the sigilarium has been this frantic mess, led pretty much completely by Isik; we’ve just been dancing to her tune.” She absentmindedly set her hand on her abdomen. “Not that I’m complaining, I guess. It’s turned out well, shockingly. We’re here. Tiq’s here. All alive. I can only hope this works out, because if it doesn’t, I don’t know what we’ll do. Target another sigilarium? I doubt we could pull it off a second time for a lot of reasons. We need something that will change people’s hearts and give them the courage to resist, because even though we have a lot of great allies, we can’t do this alone.”

I laughed softly. “I’m just glad you’re here. There was no realistic way I was going to pull off that summoning up there on the plateau.”

“Hmm…” She narrowed her eyes and pressed her lips together.

“...What?”

“Oh, well, about those sigils…”

I waited. “Uh huuuuh?”

“They didn’t look like the configurations I know for summoning.”

“Maybe it’s different for a dragon?”

“Well,” she said, shrugging. “Maybe? I don’t see why they would be, though. They’d just be bigger and more complex, but not as different as they appeared up there.”

A little anxiety began to creep into my decent mood. “Could they be planning something nefarious? Is this all a ruse or something?”

“I don’t think so…I couldn’t imagine what it would be, but I think there’s definitely something we don’t know yet.”

“We should ask Tiq what she thinks.”

Revana laughed at that. “She’ll either figure it out instantly or be so off in the clouds that she won’t even hear us.
