Chapter Eighteen – Shelly

Riding on Gideon’s back was one of the most thrilling things Shelly had ever done. Okay, the most thrilling thing she had ever done. Until now.

Two dragons were most definitely better than one.

Gideon matched his speed to his father’s as they flew back over Cairnnor toward the ocean and Wishing Moon Bay beyond. The older dragon seemed to be coping well with the flight, but she could sense Gideon’s apprehension as she pressed her palm to his shoulder.

He was tense. Perhaps scared that the flight over the ocean might end in trouble if his father’s strength gave out on him.

Shelly kept her hand on his shoulder, trying to infuse the dragon with a sense of calm, but as the thin strip of sand that denoted the transition from land to sea appeared, the dragon swished his tail and tossed his head.

Leonard’s dragon swung his head to the side and snapped his teeth at his son before increasing his speed as if to assure him it would all be fine. Gideon beat his wings harder as he sped up and once again matched his father’s speed.

The strip of sand grew wider as they approached and then they were passing over it, heading out to sea. A breeze tugged at Shelly’s hair and the temperature seemed to drop as the sun set at their backs.

Darkness slowly surrounded them on all sides as the lights from Cairnnor disappeared into the distance. Shelly longed to see some sign of Wishing Moon Bay ahead but there was none.

Then, as if someone had flicked a switch, small pinpricks of light appeared one by one above their heads. The stars were coming out as if they were lighting the way to Wishing Moon Bay. A thrill passed through her, and Gideon’s dragon shivered and seemed to relax as if he’d captured her excitement.

This was probably a common sight for a dragon shifter but for Shelly, she had never seen so many stars. She’d never been so far from any light pollution. It was heavenly.

Just like the dragons who flew abreast, father and son, two magnificent beasts who rivaled any heavenly display.

Shelly rode the dragon with her head turned toward the stars. Her body, now attuned to the rocking motion of dragon flight, seemed to move as one with the dragon, she no longer had to think about it.

She’d never felt a part of something bigger before but as they flew on, it was like she was connected to the world around her. She was a part of it. A vital component, just like every living thing in the world.

When she turned her gaze from the sky, the lights from Wishing Moon Bay were close. Leonard had made the trip easily, in fact, the old dragon looked as if he had a wide grin on his face.

Shelly found herself grinning back at him, his good mood infectious. If only they were not returning under a cloud of uncertainty.

Marek. Could they trust him or was he
