CHAPTER 28
It didn’t register with Corrine that the popping sounds she heard were gunfire until she put a big, thick pine tree between her and the hill where the archer was. The way sound bounced off the hill surrounding the road, she couldn’t tell where the shooting was coming from, but she figured it had to have something to do with the archer failing to light her on fire.
Even though she thought someone might have put a bullet in the asshole firing arrows, she stayed off the road and ran from tree to tree. She had felt too tired to run before, but thinking she was going to start burning to death any second gave her a great second wind.
She was tempted to try the two-way radio to find out where everybody was, but felt better having a gun in her hand. She couldn’t believe there was a time last night when she was getting her gear together when she thought three full magazines might be too many. She was down to her last one and as far as she knew, the hills were still full of scavengers.
She heard sporadic gunfire echoing through the hills, which made her wonder if her side was winning or losing.
Corrine saw Henderson first and abandoned her tree to tree think and ran straight to him.
Once she reached him, she saw Machado down and out as well. She checked and saw that despite being a bloody mess, Henderson was still drawing breath. He had a pulse too, but it was weak. Whoever improvised the belt tourniquet delayed his death, but if Corrine didn’t do something to stop the bleeding, he wouldn’t last too much longer.
She took off her pack and grabbed the rubber tubing designed to be a quick and effective tourniquet and tied it off just behind the belt. The slow trickle of blood came to a complete stop.
She shuffled to Machado. He was out cold, but his pulse was still strong and his breathing regular. She put some smelling salts under his nose and then moved back to Henderson.
Machado sat up as she was filling a syringe with morphine.
“What the hell happened?”
“I don’t know,” she told him. “I just got here.”
“Damn, someone took my gun.”
Corrine looked down at Henderson’s empty holsters. “Someone took his weapons, too.”
“Damn, where’s Penelope?”
Corrine shook her head. “I haven’t seen her. When I got here, it was just you two.”
“Damn, she was right here with us.”
Corrine got ready to stab Henderson in the thigh when he sat up, grabbed her wrist, and said, “Don’t do it.”
Corrine tried to pull away, but even though he was down a lot of blood, she couldn’t get free of his grip.
“I know you might be able to handle the pain now,” she told Henderson, “but I need to cauterize the wound and that is going to make losing the leg seem like a vacation.”
“McReady has Penelope. If you give me that, I’m going to be out and I need to be awake to go get her.
