CHAPTER 12
When she got up the next morning, Della had a plan in place.
Sheâd do just what Sophia had said. Sheâd ask her own questions the next time she saw Bryce Summers. Sheâd started a list of them last night before she went to bed and writing them down had helped ease her concerns. The worry sheâd felt building had started to subside too, which had given her time to think about hiring Molly. She hadnât come to a decision quite yet, but she was close.
Before she dealt with all of that, she had one other thing she needed to do. She wanted to meet with Mabel Anderson and discover whether she was a viable suspect. Was she able-bodied enough from all of her lawn care work that she could find a way to poison some dogs? Or was she too old for that kind of thing? There was only one way to find out.
When Della pulled up at Mabel Andersonâs house, she noticed there was already a car in front of it, parked along the curb. She parked behind it, staring at the car as if it might tell her if its owner was at Mabelâs house or one of her neighbors.
âHere we go,â Della said as she climbed out of her truck and headed toward the door.
She looked over at the lawn in question and had to admit that it did look incredibly nice. There wasnât a weed in sight. Neatly trimmed hedges were near the house with seasonal flowers in bloom in front of it. The dirt around many of them looked fresh. Since it had been dry lately, whatever had been done had been done recently.
When she was on the porch, Della cleared her throat and stood up straighter, then she pushed the doorbell and stepped back to wait.
The woman who opened the door was a young black woman, not at all who Della had expected to come to the door. Her short, cropped hair didnât have a single grey hair, so Della was sure this was not Mabel Andersonâs home. Derek Murphy must have given her the wrong address.
âIâm sorry, I was told this is Mabel Andersonâs house,â Della said.
The woman smiled. âI donât look like a Mabel to you?â she asked as she chuckled. She poked her fingers in her hair as she cocked her head to one side.
Della winced. âNot really?â She wasnât sure if sheâd accidentally offended her or not.
The woman laughed. âWell good because my nameâs Tonya. Iâm Mabelâs home nurse. Come on in. Iâm almost done.â She was still chuckling as she led Della through the house.
The home was immaculate, and nothing was out of place. When they entered the living room even the carpet looked like it had never been walked on. An older woman was seated in front of the television, watching The Weather Channel. Her snow-white hair was curly and sticking out in a puff, her lined face impassive.
âMabel, you have a visitor,â the woman said as she led Della over to the couch.
