128 The Dog Who Loved Too Much
summer, when Laureen moved to a new house. What had been a low-grade phobia escalated by several orders of magnitude following the move. The new house was situated on the top of a windy hill and had a particular type of fluted roof tile and overhanging eaves that together somehow caused peculiar howling sounds, particularly when a northeaster was blowing. Laureen credited the sudden deterioration in Sybil's condition to this acoustic phenomenon. I could see that Sybil was in a sorry state; even the visit to my consulting room had stressed her to the limit. She was salivating, panting, and pacing throughout the interview, almost as if in the midst of a storm. She showed some mild interest in me and was, if anything, on the friendly side, but Laureen was clearly the center of her universe. Sybil was sensitive to her every gesture and was constantly trying to catch her eye, sometimes standing in front of her and pawing at her gently, looking for any kind of acknowledgment. Laureen reported that Sybil's behavior during thunderstorms was becoming progressively more extreme. Several hours before a storm, Sybil would begin continuous pacing, panting, and whining, and would refuse to be separated from Laureen. By the time the storm actually arrived, Sybil was hysterical and, in addition to the above behavior, would salivate profusely and sometimes vomit or urinate on the floor. This represents a fairly severe form of the thunderstorm phobia disorder. During one of the storms, Laureen had tried isolating Sybil from the sight and sound of the storm by confining her in a large pen in the cellar. She stayed down there with the dog, but had to leave for a short while during the storm to attend to some business. During her absence, she left a radio on to console Sybil and drown out the faint sound of thunder. On her return, she found a scene reminiscent of a chainsaw massacre.
