Food aggression

Dogs showing food aggression may be very dangerous, especially for young children. These dogs savagely defend their food and growl constantly while eating. If they have a bone or a biscuit, they will sometimes even lunge at and bite anyone who passes close to them.

It is natural for dogs to jealously guard their food or bones and fight for larger portions.

Food aggression may occur in conjunction with dominance aggression.

It is probably easiest and safest to feed these dogs in a separate and enclosed room. Avoid giving them bones as these are usually very actively defended. It is possible, but often difficult, to train them out of this behaviour, so seek expert help.

Start by asking the dog to sit at a distance from its empty food bowl. Pick up the empty bowl, place a little food in it, place it on the ground and allow the dog to eat. When the dog has finished, repeat the process. Eventually you should be able to hold the bowl while the dog eats from it.

If the dog growls during any part of the procedure, stop the feeding.
