Manipulating Antecedents (Antecedent Control Procedures)

We can do more to encourage the desirable behavior and discourage the undesirable behavior than merely making the provocative stimulus evoke a replacement behavior in place of an aggressive behavior. Remember, to change behavior we change the environment that sustains it. That means making changes to the A (antecedents—things that come before the behavior), as well as the C (consequences—things that come after the behavior). Although most people are focused on the consequences, adjusting the antecedents can really improve your odds. Antecedent control is a term used to describe the measures we can take to address what comes before the behavior.
