In the Type of the Hebrews

15. Notice that what (276) had happened to the Jews is also the model of these things that will happen to you. For just as all the Egyptians’ evil deeds had come to an end for the Hebrews, so also here all the world’s evils shall disappear and vanish for you with its excesses and its burden, its anxiety and its cares. Up until the sea the Hebrews were laboring for the Egyptians; but after the sea and beyond they were set apart for God’s service by the word of God. The slavery of the Jews in Egypt is a model for your servitude in the world. The freedom that they had taken up in the desert is an example, moreover, of the freedom you will receive after your departure from the world. Egypt was making the Hebrews work with mud and bricks and with toils and harsh labors;11 and with cares, anxiety, adversities, and groans the world also works against you. The Jews were washed of the mud of Egypt once they had crossed over the sea, and you also have two baptisms. One is of grace that occurs through water, and the other is of your will so that when you have dived from the world into the love of God, you will spring up outside of it, just as the Hebrews after they had departed from the sea12 had received other rules and were worthy of other food,13 and new waters had burst forth for their drinking,14 and other commandments and laws were delivered to them to keep.15 They received heavenly revelations, were worthy of spiritual visions, and heard the voice of God (277) close by while he was speaking with them. The angels also had mixed with them,16 and [the Hebrews] had attained the company and communion with the spiritual powers, and the tabernacle was pitched among them and they were given the explanation of the worship [that took place] within it, and the crucified serpent was erected for them in the desert for healing and health from the bites of venomous snakes.17 It is as if their entire way of life18 already existed in the next world that is exempt from all worldly custom.
