Spiritual Poverty and the Gaze of Eternity
Once we have opened to the silence of the Ground of Being, we center on letting go of any and all self-descriptionsâeven those that may be reflective of some past insight or awakening. In the Ground of Being, all self-descriptions must be left behind, otherwise we cannot enter fully. We must be as spiritually naked and empty of self-orientation as possible.
Jesus taught, âBlessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.â To be poor in spirit is to be empty of ideas and images as well as assertions and denials regarding point of view. It is to enter our empty, obscure, and dark core that is in direct contact with the mysterious and unknown dimension of Being. We can take no previous experience or past knowing with us into this Ground. This is essential to the deepest awakening. Anything we hold onto will do nothing but hold us back.
