Color blocking A large area of one color allows for the use of multiplacing or quick diamond painting, as color changing is not needed as much.

Confetti An area where multiple colors are mixed. Use of a multiplacer is not possible, as many color changes are needed and will slow the painting process.

Other companies use hand-chart images. After an image is uploaded into a computer, a graphic designer spends hours choosing colors and placement. If a color doesn’t look correct, the designer will change it. Most hand-charting sizes take between 8 to 12 hours depending on the detail of the image, the level of color blocking, and color changes needed.

Symbols are key to knowing where to place a diamond, however, and many companies include an added grid guide. A round diamond painting uses circles around each symbol—lovingly known as training wheels or a dummy circle (no one is calling anyone a dummy, it’s just a name). A square diamond painting uses horizontal and vertical lines. Depending on your personality, you may have a love or hate relationship with the guides. Not all companies use guides. This is where it’s nice to have YouTube review channels to research what each company does and help direct you to the one that best accommodates your preferences.

pro tip

Watch out for similar symbols, letters, and/or numbers. From time to time a company will choose ones that are too similar to one another and they can be easily mixed up. Mixing up colors on a canvas is the worst and will lead to some choice words being said and lots of tweezing as diamonds are removed and replaced.
