THE DSM AND THE LEXICON OF DISORDERS

The first way to think about the influence of the DSM is simply to look at the number of times the manual itself is mentioned. Figure 8.1 presents several trends, the first for references to the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual” (searched also using the acronym “DSM”). References to the DSM have increased over time, though not in perfect sync with the release of its editions. The first edition of the DSM was published in 1952 and the second in 1968, but neither edition seemed to attract much attention. The DSM was rarely mentioned from 1960 to the late 1970s, befitting its neglect among professionals, scientists, and certainly the general public. The strongest takeoff point is in 1980, when DSM-III was published. And, indeed, references to the DSM grew exponentially thereafter, far exceeding any trend before it. Furthermore, the acceptance of the form of the DSM, as published in its third edition, hardly meant there was an eventual plateau in references to the manual. Each subsequent edition appears to have produced still another spike.
