The ancient Chinese science of energy flow, harmony, and cultivationâonly in the last century termed âqigongââhas long been central to my practice and teaching because I have seen how universally it supports others at any stage of their practice. Though qigong has been expressed and taught in many ways or with many emphases, the focus in my teaching is on coherence and transparency.
My experience is that qigong practice is an opportunity to address the totality of disharmony in our function through an integrated approach that engages the body, mind, heart, breath, and movement in a way that reverses and re-habituates the tendency to disharmony and separation, and that restores our expressive being of coherence and transparency.
First, through both moving and still practices, we cultivate and restore the coherent functioning of body, mind, breath, and heart with our dynamic energetic matrix. This eliminates most of the mental and emotional noise and discord in the system, which is a product of disharmony and lack of flow. Then our awareness, and this entire coherent system, absent of interference patterns, becomes naturally transparent to the awake, joyful, and infinite nature of being.
I have found that, quite universally, as we enter into the movements of qigongâno matter how rigid or awkward we may be at the start, or how new we may be to its principlesâit is as if we have sent a message out into the energetic field that we are ready to be re-attuned and restored to its harmonic flow. Gradually the field begins to activate itself and inform our movements. And gradually, as we surrender the control, rigidity, or awkwardness with which we held our bodies, there is a relaxation into the flow of movement, governed by the energy itself.
As the energy circulates, the places that were congested dissolve back into the stream; and the places that were deficient become nourished and full. The result is that we end up feeling like what some part of us suspected life was supposed to feel like in the first place. And we are restored to a taste of Late Heaven.
