CHAPTER ELEVEN

Monday

No need to set the alarm. I get a call from the city desk at seven thirty. The chief has called a press conference for nine. He will not be in a very good mood, I’m guessing, since the punch line of his little meeting is in the headline atop A1 this morning: Mystery call made to death pilot?

I tell the early morning guy that I’ll get it. No need for him to send Mark Baer to do a little beat-poaching, even if it is my day off.

I wouldn’t miss this press conference for the world.

Our mouthpiece in charge of saving us from lawsuits didn’t do much violence to my story, and the copy desk didn’t mangle it. To make sure of that, I was there breathing my nicotine breath down Ray Long’s neck while he worked on it. It’s all there, spelled out for our readers. The call to David Biggio, plus the fact that Biggio seems to have been occupied elsewhere when his favorite lawyer was murdered.

It was ten thirty when I got back last night. Cindy ordered me a sausage pizza, which I reheated in the microwave and consumed while I filled her in on the story, plus the all-consuming mystery of the publisher’s iPhone.

“She must be a piece of work,” was Cindy’s astute assessment.

She complimented me on eschewing Penny Lane for a change. I didn’t tell her how tempted I was when the usual crowd tried to enlist me. Probably, if I’d stayed around much longer, they would have broken down my meager resistance.

Instead, I told her that I loved her more than beer. She seemed touched.
