CHAPTER 30
The next morning I headed to Jitters for coffee and to start my search for Glad. It didnât make sense that she would vandalize John Archerâs grave, but there was no denying that it had been her car that nearly crashed into mine in the middle of the night.
Glad wasnât at Jitters, but two cups of coffee and a chocolate doughnut were there waiting for me. Along with Molly.
âThis seems like a great place to hang out,â she said when she saw me.
âIt is.â I waved to Carrie. âI think everyone in town comes here at one point or another.â
âThatâs why Iâm here. So I can talk to people.â
âAbout Winston? Molly, most of the people in town didnât even know him. And those who did donât want to be interrogated over their morning coffee.â
âWhat are my options? Itâs not like Jesse is giving me addresses of any of his suspects. I have to start somewhere.â
Carrie saw me finishing my second cup of coffee and came over with a full pot. âIâll give you a refill if you tell me what happened at the cemetery last night.â
âSomeone threw red paint on John Archerâs grave,â I told her. âI think Jesse is there now, trying to figure out which high school kid was in the mood to pull a prank.â
âOne of my customers said it probably was Mary Shipmanâs doing, but it wonât be investigated because sheâs Gladâs sister,â Carrie said. âPersonally, I think itâs tied into the murder.â
âOf my uncle?â Molly asked.
Carrie jumped at the statement. âYour who?â
âHer great-uncle was Winston Roemer,â I explained. âSheâs here to solve his murder.â
âOh, well,â Carrie stammered. She looked toward me with a puzzled expression. âDoes Jesse know about this?â
âHe knows, and so far heâs all for it,â I said.
âWho is Mary Shipman?â Molly asked. âCan we talk to her?â
âWhoâs talking, and what about?â Natalie had snuck up behind me and nearly got a cupful of coffee on her T-shirt for startling me.
I didnât want to admit it, but Molly had a point. Everyone kept talking about Mary Shipman, but so far no one had talked to her. Maybe she knew something, and there was only one way to find out.
âIâll tell you about it on the way to Mary Shipmanâs house,â I said to Natalie.
âReally? Cool. But you have to drive. I canât fit behind the wheel anymore.â She patted her alarmingly large belly.
âWhen are you due again?â
âJuly 26th.â
âAre you having twins?â
âActually, Iâm having one regular-size baby and about thirty pounds of fat.â She eyed what was left of my doughnut. âWhatâs one more pound?â she asked as she grabbed it and stuffed it in her mouth.
